Group Education Project

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a nice weekend, with or w/out Superbowl festivities.

Chad and I took a very focused perspective on this, creating a group project assignment that could be used in a math class, in a face-to-face classroom type setting.

It's posted here-- http://web.pdx.edu/~chaneyd/docs/GroupGraphingProj.pdf

It was good having to think specifically about the group interaction component and how that could be encouraged in a positive way. I wonder if it would be beneficial to take a class session to provide a mini-training in effective group interaction and communication?

  1. I like this hands on integration of manipulating data and collecting data through a survey with fellow classmates. How much time do they have for completing this activity?
Based on teacher classroom observations, I would give samples of roles students can assume, and define better the types of questions that are OK to ask people. (weight could be a sensitive issue). Thematic questions such as plotting average local temperature over 12 months or other thematic questions. I would have them use the Google form feature that allows you to easily set up a survey that is aggregated in Google excel spreadsheet. Just some thoughts. You can invite them through e-mail to fill it out online.

  2. Thanks for the ideas. The Web survey tools are great and I think one of them could be used very effectively here. That would sure increase the number of responses as well, since students could easily email the survey out to others. Other points are very important. Depending on time, it could become a small lesson in survey work (noting benefits as well as problems and pitfalls). Chad and I didn't discuss time involved-- that is really important to include. Depends on what else is going on in class, but maybe 1-2 weeks??
